CASE STUDY: South Australian Health & Medical Institute (SAHMRI)

The SAHMRI building was one of the first of its kind to introduce the convergence of technologies, which included a sophisticated Building Management System (BMS).

All of AZZO’s key solutions were enlisted in delivering a highly cost-efficient and reliable power automation system for a building that is still one of its kind in the world.

BACKGROUND

Given that SAHMRI was a very advanced project of its kind at the time, one of the main aims for this state-of-the-art building was the successful convergence of technologies. This involved creating a sophisticated Building Management System (BMS).

Partnering with Schneider Electric, AZZO was engaged by SA Health initially, to provide energy monitoring capabilities. However, our involvement soon developed into a full power automation program, which included a number of energy management solutions that were industry leading at the time, and now adopted as industry standard.

THE CHALLENGE

Two primary factors were at the core of what AZZO and Schneider were faced with. The first being, energy cost efficiencies. Every dollar saved in power, is a dollar that could help fund ground-breaking medical advancements.

Secondly, being a healthcare industry facility, conducting irreplaceable research day in, day out, an unfailing source of quality power was critical. Furthermore, the power automation systems introduced needed to be future-ready.

There are few facilities like SAHMRI, and the world-leading work being carried out now needs to continue for decades to come.

THE SOLUTION

All of AZZO’s key capabilities were integral in the delivery of the SAHMRI project. Led by our Director of Engineering, James Diliberto, we brought together a number of different technologies – with our Energy Management solution always at the centre of what
we delivered.

This included full metering architecture and the introduction of PowerLogic Ion Meters and our proprietary software, Power Monitoring Expert. These allowed us to introduce peak load lopping and peak shaving functionality. With SAHMRI conducting critical medical research, a fail save power supply was critical.

Fortunately, AZZO was heavily involved throughout the design and construction of the electrical engineering component of the building. This is where we developed our highly acclaimed Energy Power System Supply test solution – ensuring the SAHMRI building has full power reliability and is industry compliant – a system that will be utilised for many years to come.

“SAHMRI’s vision for the facility was to provide a fully integrated solution across all building services, facilities and functional areas.

AZZO worked closely with Schneider Electric, Aurecon Consultants and SAHMRI to deliver an outstanding solution and powerful tool for Energy Management.”
